A Leisure Day

Today was a short easy 235 mile or so ride.  My goal when I left Tracy was to attempt to avoid the interstate as much as possible.  Today I traveled as much as I could on the old Route 66.

I have more pictures then words today.  They are an important part of today's post.  As recommended by Mickey and Dave, I went from Laughlin to Oatman, Arizona.  Oatman is famous for many things click here.  It was definitely worth the ride.

I had lunch at the Oatman hotel and the entire wall of the restaurant and bar are full of stapled dollar bills.  The bartender told me there were 60,000 of them and they have them insured.

Now there are 60,001.  From Oatman I rode to Kingman on the old 66 and ran into some more landscape pictures (but not too many)

The rest of the day was uneventful.  I finished up as far as I could on 66 and ended up in Flagstaff late afternoon..I'm staying at the Hotel Monte Vista in downtown on recommendation from a German guy I met in Death Valley.  Then I stopped at the Harley shop in Williams AZ and the parts guy is a bartender here on weekends.  I'm staying put for 2 nights.  Tomorrow is going to be short ride and hopefully some hiking.  I'm going to take the scenic route from Flagstaff to Sedona via Oak Creek Canyon.

And as a side note...my odometer shows about 1050 miles so far....about what I thought I'd average...

Oatman looks like a fun place...I'm curious about how the dollar bill gig got started...and how long it's been going on?

That camaraderie of travelers giving each other recommendations is always a cool thing

Hope the hiking is fun and spectacular.

Looks to me like you are most definitely getting your kicks on Route 66. Isn't it great that there are so many places like this is America that might lay undiscovered to most of us except for travelers like yourself!

Enjoy the two days of non-biking; I'm sure you'll have a great time!

katherine...the bartender said they've been doing the dollar thing for 80 years plus. I'm not sure how it got started...and yes..the connections one makes while traveling is helpful...especially amongst bikers...the hike should be good..

Linda...2 days of non biking??...bite your tongue. It's about a 30 mile ride to Sedona that takes about an hour...depending on how I feel I may make a loop through Prescott..not sure yet...2 days of non biking....laughing....

"The Ride" sounds like it is going great. It is always interesting to see all the 'out of the way' places. When Chris and I drive cross country we make sure to allow time for seeing the historic/sophomoric things. When are you going to 'the canyon' (as the locals call it)?
Great pictures. I really like the timered ones where you are part of the scenery. Enjoy, enjoy, stay safe and enjoy!!

I've lived here for nearly 20 years, and I've never been to Oatman. Have heard of it, naturally, but never made it up there yet. You beat me!

I love Sedona, but it is very touristy now. Prescott is quaint, and it has a folksy feel. We really like it there.

Have a great trip!

How fun. Love the dollar bill thing and like Katherine would love to know how it started. I wonder if anyone even knows after 80 years.

Have a great time. :)

Cool info on the dollar bills in the bar. I love the scenery pics, Dave J. would LOVE to be there. We were thinking of going to Sedona when we were visiting mom and dad in March, but it was too far away for the short time we were there. Continue to drive safe!!
